As Pickleball continues to grow in popularity, injuries are becoming much more common.  Pickleball is rapidly becoming the sport of choice, especially with older and retired folks who want to stay active.

It’s such a fun game and it’s easy to learn, especially for former tennis players.  However, many senior players are at a greater risk to experience a pickleball injury of one sort or another.

Pickleball players of all ages suffer many of the same kinds of injuries that athletes suffer in other racquet sports.  Most commonly, they experience minor injuries to their elbows, knees, shoulders, backs, ankles, and wrists.

You are likely going to have to deal with bumps and bruises as part of the game, so we have put together a list of various braces and support products that can help you stay on the court.

The Most Common Pickleball Injuries

The most common pickleball injuries are ankle strain, Achilles tendon strain, heel strain, knee sprain, hamstring strain, wrist fracture, and shoulder strain.

Pickleball Elbow, Tennis Elbows’ cousin is quickly gaining a reputation of its own and is becoming more and more prevalent in the Pickleball community.   I just recovered from it and still use a brace so I can play while keeping it at bay. It’s a simple remedy that works.

If you’re like me, you need to stay active.  It’s good for the heart, the lungs and to keep muscle tone.  There’s nothing like playing outside under the sun for two hours to shed the water weight, build endurance and stay in shape.

The brace is both a physical and psychological support.  When I have it on, I don’t worry about my knee giving out.  If you’re living with a bit of knee pain and you’d like to play, try using a knee brace.  It may help you stay in the game and stay in shape.

How to Treat Your Shoulder Pain at Home in a Few Minutes

  Published: February 25, 2009

Shoulder pain affects many people around the world, and many people believe that they only have two options: surgery, or just putting up with it. In fact, there’s another approach to treating shoulder pain which is incredibly effective, and which I used with great success.

You might’ve been told that shoulder pain will “never really go away”, or that it “always requires surgery”, or that “your shoulder will never be the same again”.

Well, whoever said that was most definitely wrong.

Shoulder pain is not permanent, can be treated and cured without surgery, and it is perfectly possible to get your shoulder back to how it used to be.

I know this to be true because that’s what I did when I hurt my shoulder. I used to suffer from extreme shoulder pain throughout the day and night. Sometimes it would keep me awake because I couldn’t get comfortable. Worse, it would bother me while I was at work (I sit at a desk for most of the day), and I couldn’t get comfortable there either.

My friends told me to visit the doctor, so I did. He prescribed rest and anti-inflammatory medications, which worked OK for a while but as soon as I stopped taking the drugs the pain came right back. I couldn’t believe it. Why had my shoulder pain come back?

Really, the answer is clear:

By taking the medication, I wasn’t treating the source of the pain, I was just covering it up.

Instead, I learned about an alternative treatment to surgery for my shoulder pain: physiotherapy. Not being able to afford an expensive professional physio, I had to learn the techniques for myself. Luckily for me (and you), they’re very easy to do.

I learned a few simple stretches and used them to keep my shoulder loose, regain flexibility and mobility and reduce pain. I also learned a few basic exercises for strengthening the shoulder’s inner muscles and tendons (the rotator cuff), stimulating the healing process and relieving pain.

By combining these techniques I became my own physiotherapist, and my shoulder pain disappeared completely. Whatever the reason for your shoulder pain, it is very likely that some simple home physio can have a dramatic impact on your pain, curing it completely in most cases.

Stay Active:

Sports and exercise are critically important for our health.  They help with obesity, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular issues to name a few.   Staying active not only improves our physical health, it also enhances our mental, emotional and social conditions.  It is essential that you stay active and healthy.

Here at, my goal is to provide you with sound information that can help you make common-sense decisions that will help prevent you from becoming injured in the first place.

However, if you play pickleball you will most likely have to suffer through some minor aches, pains, and bruises.  More serious injuries will occur occasionally no matter what precautions we take.  It’s in our nature to “push-the-envelope”, stay for “one-more-game” or play through a minor injury.

The following are some basic steps we can all take to reduce or eliminate the number of injuries we have to deal with:

Prevention Is The Best Remedy:

Warm Up-Slowly:

Stretch the muscles in your legs, arms, back, and neck. Remember, playing tight before muscles have had a chance to warm up, could lead to a short day on the court and the purchase of another brace.  Stretching the muscles before you play is critical.

Always drink plenty of fluids both before and during and after playing.   Staying hydrated will help prevent cramps, muscle pulls and dehydration and will help you to stay in the game.

Asics Mens’ Court Shoe

The single most important piece of equipment to buy when first starting out, is NOT a paddle but is, in fact, your sneakers.

Wearing the proper court shoes (sneakers) will unquestionably prevent the most common pickleball injuries experienced in the knee and ankle areas.

Tennis type sneakers will also help prevent falls that cause sprained or broken wrists.

Many people new to the game will start playing without even thinking about what they’re wearing on their feet.  They’ll grab whatever pair of athletic shoes they’ve got handy, and think they’re ready to go.

Asics Womens’ Court Shoes

Court Shoes that allow you to move and shuffle around the court without too much trouble are ideal.  They allow for the proper amount of skid.

The soles are smoother and flatter than the soles of Running Shoes.  The treads on court shoes are much smaller and closer together which allow them to slide.

You must be able to move forward and backpedal without your sneakers sticking to the floor.

I love Asics Court Shoes and use them exclusively.  They are lightweight and still provide great ankle support. Check them out here.

Running Shoes are the WORST type of footwear for pickleball.

They have a tendency to grab and stick to the court thus causing rips, pulls, strains and falls.

Proper sneakers are a must.   A good pair of Court Shoes will help prevent serious injuries.  This is by far the easiest way to avoid the most common pickleball injuries to the knees, ankles, and wrists.

If you don’t believe me and you think that you’re going to save money by just wearing what you already have in the closet, then good luck.

My hope is that you won’t be back here to purchase the “best ankle brace for sprained ankle” or one of the other braces for the knee, back or wrist.

Additionally, let’s hope that you won’t have to add in the cost of seeing a doctor or physical therapist, or regret your time lost on the court.

If you’re going to play, play safe and spend the money to buy the right equipment.

Pickleball Injuries Can Be Prevented:
